I'm not afraid of changing my hair. I know a lot of women feel that theirs is a security blanket, and I completely understand that. But it's just hair, right?! It grows. If we are one of the fortunate ones blessed with good health, I think it's a little childish to be so committed to something so trivial as hair. I saw a woman yesterday at the store and struck up a conversation with her in the checkout line. She was wearing a scarf over her head, and was flipping through a magazine with Reese Witherspoon on the cover. She whispered to me that she missed having long beautiful hair, but that she was going through chemo and radiation and so she was losing quite a bit of hers. I instantly felt like an idiot for ever complaining about mine. If this woman can endure such a painful process, I can certainly stop caring so much about what mine looks like.

The whole thing got me thinking. I've hated my hair since I was a kid. My mom used to cut it into a bob, and sorry ma, but you did a pretty bad job (she knows this lol). I always wanted to be blonde with long straight locks that never frizzed up. Obviously I didn't inherit that in the DNA department, so I did what I could to highlight and straighten the hell out of it. I grew it long in my twenties, but after getting married, I chopped it off and it's been fairly short ever since. Now that it's growing out, I'm tempted to change the color and go a bit lighter. But do I really want the hassle? To spend the money? I like my hair dark because it's low maintenance, and it costs hardly anything to take care of. But I'm getting that itch to just go for it. It's hair.

I'd also like to start doing more with it, and by that, I mean putting it back in a bun. So feminine! I've picked some things from Pinterest to show you.

Here is the color I would absolutely love! Still natural like I prefer but definitely lighter than what I have currently.

What do you think (keeping in mind that lovely woman I told you about). It's a shallow question, but one I feel safe asking about on this blog 😊

  1. It's not shallow, sometimes you just need to change it up. Honestly I love your dark hair, I think the contrast is just amazing with your fair complexion. Funny enough whenever I see a snap of you or when I saw you I remember thinking how pretty your hair is. It seems like the type that is low maintenance too. So I say do whatever YOU want!

    1. Thank you Rachelle! It's definitely very low maintenance which suits my lifestyle. I'm not good with styling my own hair so it works, but just trying to figure out if I want to change it. I'll probably keep it dark!

  2. I can't argue with Rachelle's advice! I personally think your dark hair is so gorgeous and striking with your complexion and features! You don't need to do anything different. But if you want to...the color samples you showed are really pretty too. It is definitely more time and expense to upkeep but that's part of being a woman. :)

    1. LOL yes the joys of being a woman. My mom never cares much about her hair. She is in her mid sixties and has never even dyed it! I want to be more like that ;) I'll probably keep it dark because I just don't want to spend the money. I'd rather use that for clothes! It's fun to look at pictures though for inspiration

  3. I don't think you're been shallow. I actually think you are a very well rounded person based on your posts. It's ok to think about more trivial things sometimes and hair is a topic I think about too.
I was not liking my hair growing up either. It was so straight I couldn't even put it in a ponytail. And it was a boring shade of moussy brown. Around when I was 15-16, my hair started to get nice waves and now I love my hair :P
If you want to go blonde, make sure you go to a professional and also do it very gradually. Your hair is dark and if you try to do it one step you will fry it out.
For reference, I've kept my hair dark most of my life. But I have had pink hair, blonde hair, jet black hair and blue hair too, lol! I think in the end everyone's natural colour is their best. Safest bet is to play with tones in the natural hair. Like I have brown hair with lotsa red undertones. I typically dye my hair to make it look more burgundy in fall/winter and more light brown in summer.

    Sorry for the essay :D

    1. No need to apologize, I love reading your feedback because you're always so thoughtful! I agree, close to natural is best. It's the way we are meant to look after all ;) As I told Rachelle and Gina above, I'll probably stay dark. It's just too easy! And I do like the way it enhances my features.

  4. I love putting my hair up in a bun, but I do the same old bun time after time. I need to try some of these styles! Thinking about your hair or your looks is really only shallow if it's the ONLY thing you think about. Otherwise you just want to put your best face forward.

  5. If you like to experiment with your hair, then I think you should go for it.
It's hard to be 100% happy with what you have, to truly appreciate it and be grateful for it. You can also be truly appreciative and grateful for the fact that you have the ability to do what you want with your hair. Enjoy it.

  6. I lost a ton of hair to chemo too, but I am feeling better and thankful and I am using tape-ins now to get some thickness back! I loved having long thick hair and of course I miss it! It is not a vain question girl - you gotta feel good and love what you have. I personally thing that red tones photo would look so amazing on you for winter!

  7. Noelle - it's interesting how hair can seem so trivial - yet make such an impact on how we feel. Thank goodness it's ok to experiment bc most things are repairable - and it's liberating to take a risk that pays off! I say - go for it - get the hair that you always wanted and see how it makes you feel. At best - you'll love it, at worst, it can be fixed. My best friend from high school recently shaved the sides of her head and got purple highlights...she's a classic beauty and a mom of 4 - so although it's unexpected - it looks amazing on her and makes her so happy ;-)
