I hope everyone enjoyed my little break from style and beauty talk as I shared my road trip experience. I'm still working on a wrap-up post to tie everything together because I still have so many thoughts! But until then, I'm excited to get back to it with this Daily Ritual t-shirt dress I've been wearing on repeat.

Before my road trip, I bought this easy t-shirt dress by the brand Daily Ritual. I originally saw it on my friend and fellow blogger Gina, and it just looked so incredibly comfortable! Perfect for long drives, travel days, running errands, grabbing coffee with a friend, as a swimsuit coverup - so many options!

It's one of those items that you'll constantly reach for. Wear it with some sandals now, pair it with a utility jacket or long cardigan come Fall. The fabric (rayon and spandex) is soft and stretchy, and it hugs curves without feeling constricting. An issue I've had in the past with t-shirt style dresses is that they were either too clingy, or they draped too loosely. This one strikes the ideal balance. I got my normal size medium and the fit is perfect. I rarely say that you guys need something I feature, but in this case, if you're searching for a versatile dress then look no further.

Before I go, I quickly wanted to share what I got from the Nordstrom anniversary sale this year. The clothes and shoes didn't tempt me too much, although I did get a Barefoot Dreams circle cardigan and I love it! It'll be awhile since I can wear it, but I've been curious about these cardigans for a couple years and I totally get the hype now that I have one. I got mine in the pearl shade which is a soft grey. The fit is true to size.

I was most excited about the Charlotte Tilbury products so I got both the Pillow Talk Lip Kit as well as the eyeshadow palette. I'm a huge CT fan but her products are quite expensive. I used all of them yesterday and am really happy with the colors and quality.

I know the sale feels overhyped, but I find it's best to tune out all of the noise and shop it on my own. Did you get anything from the sale? Have a great weekend and I'll see you here on Monday!

A look into my Summer road trip continues today with a recap of Wyoming. We planned this entire vacation to center around Wyoming, so I was extremely excited as we drove closer and closer. Every mile we traveled seemed more breathtaking than the last, and when we finally crossed over the state line I was blown away by its pure beauty.

I read somewhere this weekend that you haven't seen true beauty until you've visited Wyoming and I absolutely agree! There are so many bodies of water, and the sky is as blue as blue can be. The air is fresh and crisp, the trees and mountainsides a vibrant green. I'm a beach lover to the core, but the beauty of Wyoming is on a different level altogether. I think I almost could trade the ocean for all it has to offer.

We stayed at a spacious property owned by our friend's previous boss in Etna, Wyoming. It's a sleepy little town with spectacular views of the mountains, and it's located just a couple hours outside of Jackson and Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park:

Yellowstone was a huge reason we wanted to go to Wyoming. It's a vast 3,500 square mile wilderness that takes hours to complete if you want to see everything. We managed to do quite a bit in about 8 hours, but I think we'd need one more day to hit each stop. It was beautiful weather, and aside from the thunderstorm that moved in as we were leaving the park, it was perfect for walking around. I wore jeans, my favorite new t-shirt, a utility jacket I layered around my waist, and tennis shoes.

The drive in has gorgeous views of the rivers and Yellowstone lake. We got out of the car when we wanted to take a closer look. It's definitely not a drive to be rushed! A lot of these photos I took as Nate drove, I just hung my camera out of the window. We saw bison, antelope, and our friends even spotted a grisly bear! Don't worry, they were extra cautious and they did just fine...but don't go too close to the wildlife! It was really cool to see these animals in person though.

One of my favorite things to see was the "Grand Canyon" of Yellowstone. It's really something, with the canyon opening up to reveal a massive waterfall and river below. I felt SO small.

You see the bison grazing just outside our car's window?!

Old Faithful Geyser:

Our friends had been to Yellowstone twice before, but they had never made it to Old Faithful so that was high on our priority list. It's a cone geyser that erupts every 44 to 125 minutes. On the day we went, it erupted about every 90 minutes. We walked through the site, spotting beautiful teal colored hot springs along the way. And like clockwork, we were able to see Old Faithful erupt! There was a giant crowd that formed in a circle around the geyser, and I swear there were moments where you could hear a pin drop. We all waited with baited breath...My friend's twin boys were getting impatient, and we kind of were too, but I'm glad we stayed to watch mother nature perform her show!

Jackson Hole:

We didn't have much time to explore Jackson Hole after our long day at Yellowstone, but I loved it from what I saw! I wanted to shop the local boutiques because their merchandise looked so cute in the windows, but alas we got some pizza and called it a night! However, Jackson Hole is a great place to stay in if you want to fly into southern Wyoming. It's very popular with world-class skiers and celebrities (from what I was told by a local).

Etna Wyoming:

We spent the 4th of July doing something very American - sitting by a pristine lake and fishing. It was my first attempt at fishing and I actually caught one! Unfortunately, it didn't quite make it to shore but I would have thrown it back anyway. This particular lake was about 30 miles from the property we stayed on, and it was so neat seeing how locals live. It's a beautiful place, that's for sure.

It was really hard to leave Wyoming, but I hope we can go back someday! It really is magical, especially if you love nature like I do. I would highly recommend adding it to your travel list!

Hey everyone! I feel like it's been forever since I last posted, but I'm back with a little recap of our Summer road trip. I'm breaking it up into two parts, and today is all about Utah.

It was our second time visiting Utah, but it was our first time exploring places like Bryce Canyon National Park and parts of central and northern Utah. The first time we went to Zion before heading to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Zion was absolutely majestic in size and scope, but Bryce Canyon was just so unique in its beauty. I've never experienced anything quite like it. We were only there for half a day, but it was plenty of time to get out of our jeep and take in the breathtaking views within the park. There's a shuttle system that picks passengers up and drops them off at various lookouts and points, but for time's sake Nate and I just drove ourselves and that worked out just fine. It really depends on your schedule and how long you'd like to explore. This was on the first leg of our trip so we were extremely excited when we finally looked down into the canyon!

Bryce Canyon National Park

If and when we go again, I'd like to hike one of the trails leading into the canyon! It truly looks magnificent. The rust colored rocks jutting out like bony fingers...I was mesmerized. It's definitely one of the coolest things I've ever seen. The weather was really nice too which made the experience all the more pleasant. They don't allow dogs so we left Nettie in our trailer with the air conditioning running. We camped for one night at Ruby's Inn (a very nice campground with all the amenities) and I highly recommend camping there because it's a mile outside of the park.

After spending one short night and part of the next day at Bryce Canyon, we headed to Bear Lake on the border of Utah and Idaho. It was a steep drive going through the mountains, but the drive itself is so beautiful that we didn't mind it one bit.

On The Road In Utah

I couldn't help but snap a ton of photos of Nettie. We try our best to include her on our camping trips, and she was happy as can be!

Bear Lake

We stayed at Bear Lake for three nights and four days. The resort town was so quaint and charming, and the lake itself was enormous with clear blue water. We swam, rode bikes, and enjoyed the scenery.

Must-Stops

If you're ever in Bear Lake, you MUST try the crepes at crepes and coffee. I got a traditional sweet crepe with nutella, and Nate got a savory crepe with turkey and avocado. Their ice coffee was delicious as well. I wish more cafes out here in California offered crepes! I could eat one every morning.

On the way back from Wyoming towards the end of our road trip, we stopped at a creamery in Beaver Utah. I'm a huge cheese lover so naturally I had to buy some cheddar cheese curds. Don't forget the milkshakes and ice cream though. I seriously gained 6 pounds on this trip! Well worth it.

Utah is such a beautiful state. The southern part is desert terrain, while northern Utah is filled with mountains, rivers, and plenty of greenery. I must say that out of all the states I've been to so far (and besides Hawaii, which is certainly the most beautiful in my opinion) Utah is just stunning! It's a must-see, especially if you love the outdoors.

Thank you guys for all the well wishes on my Instagram stories while we were away! Doing a few stories here and there was a fun way to document the trip.

I'll be back next week talking all about Yellowstone national park and Wyoming! Plus I have so many other posts to share so stay tuned :)

"You'll need coffee shops and sunsets and road trips. Airplanes and passports and new songs and old songs, but people more than anything else. You will need other people, and you will need to be that other person to someone else. A living breathing screaming invitation to believe better things."
~The Minds Journal

June is a wonderful month, punctuated by the official beginning of Summer. I always revel in this time, where the sunlight lasts longer and the pace of life slows, if only for a few short weeks.

It was a pretty uneventful month around here, but the weekends were so relaxing that I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. Here are some highlights:

Dining al fresco at Robert Renzoni Winery in Temecula. They recently started offering dinner service on Friday and Saturday evenings, up until 8:00. It was a beautiful way to eat a hearty Italian meal! I recommend the lobster ravioli. Also their red wines are the best in town.
We were the last couple there after they closed...oops! Too busy eating a slice of their lemoncello cake OMG

Making egg salad sandwiches for lunch. I hard boil some eggs, peel them, and smash them with a fork. I then add a small amount of mayo and mustard, followed by salt, pepper, and a little cayenne for kick. Add some fresh arugula to whatever bread you like, top with a generous amount of the egg salad and voila. It's easy and so delicious.

Wearing both pairs of espadrilles non-stop. June gloom was definitely present most days, so I opted for closed toe shoes that still looked Summer-ready.

Watching one of the scariest movies I've ever seen! I'm probably alone in this, but I love horror films. One of Nate's old roommates came down from L.A. to visit us, and both he and his girlfriend are actors. I asked them for movie recommendations and they suggested one called Hereditary. It is creepy! I watched with one eye shut. Very good though if you're in the mood for a scare ;)

Excited for this road trip I'm currently on (hopefully it's going well), the 4th of July in Wyoming, and going back to Ohio the last weekend of July to visit Nate's extended family.

Things I Liked In June:

1) I got my Summer FabFitFun box and it was so good! I've been a subscriber for a couple years, and I swear each quarterly box gets better and better. I've discovered so many great products like the Brighten Up! exfoliating cleanser and Oribe dry shampoo.

2) As I mentioned briefly, we had a friend visit us that we hadn't seen in ages and it felt like old times. The weather was perfect that night, and we spent hours sitting in the backyard talking and laughing.

3) I enjoyed seeing all the Pride month posts on social media. We've come a long way, but still have further to go.

Things I Didn't Like In June:

1) All of the gloomy, cold, cloudy weather! I normally try to avoid the constant complaining about weather because well, it's weather. But I'm happy to report that it is a sunny 75 degrees as I type this :)

Happy 1st day of July! I'll be back next week after my trip but have a happy and safe 4th!

6.26.2019

I'm so excited because in exactly two days, we are off on the longest Summer road trip we have ever taken. It's been months in the making and now it's finally here!

For those of you who might have missed it, myself, Nate, Nettie, and a couple of our dearest friends and their family are all hitting the road and going to Utah, Wyoming, and ending in Las Vegas Nevada. Nate and I did a similar trip a couple years ago when we ventured out to Zion and the Grand Canyon, but this time will be much different. For one, we won't just be flying by the seat of our pants and camping out in the woods alone, sleeping in our jeep (yup, we did that). This time we booked four different campgrounds to stay in. Also, we'll be traveling and sleeping in an RV which is much more pleasant than a small jeep!

I can't wait to make new memories and see more of America. Experiencing it with friends is an added bonus, and something I'm sure we'll reminisce over for years to come.

Packing for a 10 (yes 10) day road trip seems daunting, and actually it has been. But since we are mostly planning on swimming, doing some light hiking, and sight-seeing along each stop on our path, I decided to keep it as simple as possible. I really don't have the room to over-pack! I'm bringing:

a handful of casual tees and tank tops
3 pairs of shorts
1 pair of jeans
2 pairs of leggings
1 jacket, 1 sweatshirt
2 bathing suits
3 casual dresses
2 kimonos that can double as bathing suit coverups
1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of espadrilles

I figure if I need to wash anything, I can do so by hand and hang the item to dry. I love clothes, but when it comes to camping, I have a tomboy side...or really, just a zero F's given side. You have to just go with it!

I'm taking very minimal products with me that can perform double duty. For example, the cream shadow sticks from Glo can also double as eyeliner. The bronzer and highlight palette can work as eyeshadows and blush. It's all about effortless beauty when you're on a road trip. In fact, I'm sure some days I won't wear anything besides sunscreen and a little concealer.

I definitely plan on writing about my experience once we get home. In the meantime, I'll be back with my monthly edit next week!

6.24.2019

Today, I'm sharing a different kind of post than I'm used to writing but I wanted to discuss it with you. Gratitude has been on my mind a lot lately. I think we all struggle with it; it's so easy to get complacent, or even worse, it can be difficult to find the good when things aren't going the way we want them to.

The benefits of practicing gratitude are endless, and there have been several studies that show that people who are aware of the things they're thankful for lead happier, more fulfilling lives. They're also kinder than those who don't, and God knows the world can benefit greatly from that.

I've kept a gratitude journal in the past, but I realized a flaw I was making - I was writing down the same vague, generic things week after week so I lost interest and the whole exercise lost its intended purpose. What's really helped bring me back into journaling again is to come up with specific things that I'm grateful for each day. An example: Instead of writing that I'm grateful for my husband, I write down what it is specifically I'm grateful for in that moment. So, "I had a horrible migraine yesterday, and I'm grateful that Nate went to the pharmacy to get my medication and some ice cream for me."

Aside from writing in a journal, there are a few other things I've discovered that have worked for me in practicing gratitude.

1. Take Regular Social Media Breaks:
This has made the biggest impact on me in terms of my overall well-being. I remember taking my longest social media break about a year ago after speaking with my friends. I had become consumed with scrolling on my phone and I was having a tough time concentrating on anything. Even at night when I couldn't sleep, I'd immediately retreat to my phone and would fixate on all the perfect lives I saw on Instagram. It was keeping me in a really bizarre head space, constantly in a state of comparison, so I took a much needed break and haven't looked back. I take daily and weekly breaks regularly now, and you know what? Everything is just fine! I look at it when I want to, but I put it away after 10 minutes and focus on something else I need to get done. Look, there's nothing wrong with using social media, as long as it doesn't start using you.

2. Connect With A Friend Over Coffee:
I always feel more grateful after connecting with a friend. Once a month, one of my girlfriends and I go to a different coffee shop around town to catch up, vent, and essentially cheer each other on. Every one seems so busy that it can be easy to drift apart from the people in your life. When I share something personal I'm going through, it helps me feel less alone. I find that as I get older, I actually need my friends more, not less. In-person conversation will always be more impactful than over the phone, so schedule a designated meeting date and time if you need to.

3. Practice Mindfulness:
This is something I've learned not only in my own personal therapy sessions, but I've also implemented this exercise  with clients. Mindfulness is all about being present. Quite literally, to have the mind fully aware of what's happening in the moment. If I'm feeling particularly anxious, I like to take a few minutes to go outside, sit on a chair or even on grass, close my eyes, put my hands on my lap, and breathe deeply. I begin by concentrating on how my body feels, what sounds I'm hearing around me, what scents I'm smelling if any, sometimes I'll roll my head in a circle, and then I focus on just being still and breathing. It takes some practice to fully let your thoughts dissipate but once you keep at it, it will become a huge source of relief. Living in the moment absolutely creates a sense of gratitude for just being alive in the world.

4. Write It Down:
Not to be confused with a gratitude journal, I think it can be equally as cathartic to write down the things that are weighing you down. I usually have a good cry when something is bothering me. If the situation is out of my control or if I just need to vent and write down every curse word known in the English language, I do it. Then I tear the page up, throw it in the trash can, and MOVE ON.

5. Do Something You Really Enjoy:
This can be anything from practicing yoga, to taking a pottery or painting class, or curling up on the couch with a good book. For me, I love the ocean so whenever I get the chance to take a drive to the coast and sit on the beach, I do. You can do your favorite activity with a friend or spouse, or do it alone. As long as it's something (and with someone) you truly enjoy. It's amazing how much good energy you'll feel afterward. It will recharge you.

I hope these suggestions will help you in your own journey. How do you practice gratitude?
