Happy last week of May! I hope you all enjoyed the long memorial day weekend and are feeling grateful, recharged, and excited for the beginning of Summer. We had a pretty lazy three days, but I was able to spend some time with girlfriends and that's always good for the soul. We also watched motocross, went to a winery, did some cleaning around the house, and of course took some blog photos.

Wearing //

It rained most of the weekend but Saturday was gorgeous! It was sunny and in the mid 70's so naturally I wanted to be outside all day. I reached for a long floral kimono from Sole Society to layer on top of a basic bodycon dress. I'm a huge kimono fan, as they look so feminine over form fitting dresses, shorts, or jeans. As long as the rest of your outfit is streamlined, a flowing kimono is a fabulous way to add dimension and movement. I've purchased a handful the last few Summers, but this print is by far my favorite. I love the blues, greens, and pinks against the white background. It really looks and feels effortless. More styling ideas here and here.

Another thing I quickly want to mention is my new lilac bag. I don't buy handbags very often, maybe one or two per year but I'm always looking for one that's moderately priced, fairly durable, and versatile. This one by Madewell fit the bill. It is such a practical little tote and I can't emphasize that enough! It can be carried by the handles, over one shoulder, or worn crossbody style. If you're in the market for a pretty Summer bag, I highly recommend one of the lighter colors but it also comes in black and cognac as well.

How do you feel about kimonos? I see them everywhere!

I'll be back on Friday with my monthly edit 💋

5.22.2019

I started this series back in February as a way to share the things I add to my closet throughout the year. You'll notice that Spring is my favorite season to shop, with the promise of Summer just around the corner. These are all items that I have purchased since February 22nd, when my first volume was posted. Some of these I've already worn, and some I haven't because it's still too cold. I've included exact links in case you want to view each individual item. If you have any questions, let me know!

North Star Layering Necklace: My friend has a similar celestial necklace I admire, so naturally this caught my eye. I love that it's all one piece! I plan on wearing it with my bathing suits for some daytime sparkle at the beach.

Madewell Mini Transport Tote: I purchased a similar Madewell tote during last year's Nordstrom anniversary sale, but I was disappointed with the color and I didn't care for the perforated leather. Back it went. This tote however is beautiful! The soft lilac color is unique, and the size is ideal. I'm glad I gave Madewell bags a second chance.

Steven Greek Sandals: I already have a pair in white from last Spring, and I enjoy them so much that I got another in cognac. Comfortable, chic, and versatile. They are pretty narrow so if you have wide feet, I recommend sizing up.

Target Leopard Print Bikini Top: Target has long been my go-to for bathing suits, and this leopard print bikini top will mix in nicely with a black bottom I already own. Separates definitely work best for most women!

Sole Society Floral Kimono:  I live in kimonos during the Summer heat. The print on this one by Sole Society will be so pretty with just a simple white tee and jeans.

LOFT Camisoles: Camisoles are great for layering underneath kimonos, cardigans, and jackets. I needed to replenish mine so I bought two from a LOFT sale - one is black and white striped, and the other is a cream color with a scalloped neckline. I got both in my normal petite size.

Ann Taylor Dress: I've already featured my new favorite dress. I think it would be amazing for baby showers, graduations, the office, church, dinners, birthday parties...where isn't it appropriate?!

Ooh La Luxe Lace Tie Top: Tie-front tees are still going strong this year, and this white lace top will be a fun weekend basic I'm sure I'll wear on repeat.

Old Navy High-Rise Elevate Leggings:  I got these for half off, and I absolutely want another! These are the best compression leggings I've tried. They really hold you in and are great for jogging and walking the pup. I went up one size.

What have you been shopping for lately? Are there any trends you're loving?

4.24.2019

As mentioned in my last post, I'm on a pretty heavy dress kick lately and this wild jasmine tea dress from MINKPINK is hands-down my favorite for Spring and Summer 2019.

This is the second dress I bought with Palm Springs in mind. It's my first dress from MINKPINK but I'm so impressed by the quality and fit that now I basically want everything they make! I felt so comfortable in it that I wore it on the drive out to the desert, and then decided to stick with it for the remainder of our first day and night. It's light and airy, perfect for walking around the town and grabbing drinks at our favorite Mexican bar.

I appreciate that it's fully lined for extra coverage, and the body of the dress has such a nice flow. The little flutter sleeves and deeper neckline give it a flirty feel without going overboard. I'm still able to wear a regular bra, but I did use a tiny bit of fashion tape as well since I brought it with me for my wrap dress. This dress has a generous fit so I would size down in retrospect, but my typical size was just fine for that carefree bohemian vibe I love.

I'm back from Mexico and finally back to blogging after a little hiatus. I had such a wonderful trip and I can't wait to share all the photos and details with you in my next posts! But until then, I dressed up in this royal blue dress a few nights before Nate and I both left the country. {In case you missed it, I took a yearly vacation with my best friend while Nate went to Beijing for a fun work project}.

Beauty // Becca glow gloss in Camellia (my new favorite!)

I specifically bought this with my vacation in mind. I don't normally buy something solely for a special occasion, but in this case, I really wanted a vibrant outfit for a night out in Tulum. I easily could have pulled something from my closet but this time I decided to splurge. Don't worry, I've already worn it three times and it won't end up collecting dust! It can be worn off the shoulder, off one shoulder, or worn on the shoulders making it more versatile than I previously thought. All of the tassels and ruffles create a beautiful cascade effect when I walk. And really, if I haven't already told you, my goal in life is to look perfectly windswept wherever I go.

Revolve is quickly becoming one of my favorite websites to shop. Some of their designs are definitely geared towards a younger crowd, but the House of Harlow line has a good mix. I also own this pleated pink skirt by HOH and it fits like a glove.

So what have I missed?! I always feel so disjointed when I take a blogging break! I need to play catch-up this week. Nate came home for the weekend (long story) but he's headed back to China again and won't be home - I think - until the end of the month.

8.22.2018

I leave on my trip to Tulum late next week, and naturally I wanted to share what I'm packing. Below is everything I'm bringing, minus a couple bathing suits and athleisure for any hikes or more rigorous exploring. We are going for 5 days, so packing light is key. I'm not much of a traveler, but when I go away for less than a week, I make sure to bring items that can easily be mixed and matched. It's essentially a mini capsule collection where I won't have to think too much! I didn't realize it until putting this collage together, but lighter neutrals, blues, and greens seems to be the general theme for my tropical wardrobe - light, and hopefully airy!

Keep in mind that Tulum is typically really hot (I think 80 degrees is the annual average), and we are going in the dead of Summer. I have family that live in Guadalajara, but my last visit to Mexico was ages ago so I've been reading up on travel blogs.
What I'm packing for Tulum:
  • Two denim shorts
  • Two pairs of sandals, one pair of flat espadrilles
  • Two kimonos
  • Two dresses, one that's a bit dressier and one that's casual
  • Two camisoles
  • Three tops/tees
  • One bathing suit coverup
  • Two bathing suits
  • Pjs
  • One "workout" outfit
  • One crossbody bag
  • One tote for the beach/pool
  • One hat
  • I *may* add my pink mini skirt

A side note on the crossbody bag: I returned this one that I got during the Nordstrom anniversary sale. It felt a little cheap to me unfortunately, and the color was also unexpected. I ended up getting this nylon crossbody from Target of all places, and I'm really happy with it so far. However, two reviews on the website say that the strap broke! I'll report back...

Most of these pieces are basics, and I find that they are the easiest to pack in a small carry-on suitcase. I'm bringing minimal beauty products as well, mostly sunscreen! We plan on taking some fun outfit pictures while we're there so I'll of course share any once I get back. In the meantime, you can see more details of my Tulum wardrobe below. I'll be back next week with an outfit post 💗

8.20.2018

Well, it's here guys. While most kids are heading back to school, we are officially deep in the dog days of Summer. It's hot, humid, and basically painful to step outside during the middle of the day. While I begin reading up on transitional pieces and planning for some of my Fall wardrobe, you can still catch me in tank tops and sandals. The heat isn't going anywhere.

I bought this faux wrap top last month in anticipation of my trip to Tulum. The print naturally is what sold it for me, as my love for tropical patterns and looser fabrics is still going strong. But, the wrap/tie detail at the waist also caught my attention. I've always loved wrap styles because they are incredibly figure flattering and look so polished. I added my old favorites - lived-in denim, metallic slides, and a lilac saddle bag for a fun night out. I'll just switch out the jeans in favor of shorts on my upcoming Mexican trip.

Speaking of which, I can't believe Tulum is two weeks away! Katie and I have been in a non-stop texting flurry wrapping up last minute details. We can't stop outfit planning either! More on that Wednesday 😉

In the meantime I'm linking up with Rachelle.  Hope you had a great weekend!

8.13.2018

This floral kimono is one of my favorite purchases of Summer, and I've worn it repeatedly with everything from dresses (last seen here), to jeans and a cami, to denim cutoffs, and here with a knotted tee and mini skirt. If you haven't tried the kimono trend yet, I mean...why not? I own three and cycle between them constantly. Depending on the print/color/length, there's something for everyone. I wear mine over a bathing suit as well and it's just the right amount of coverage.

It's funny how much my attitude has changed over the years regarding which outfits to share on this blog. Not too long ago, I would spend quite a bit of time carefully picking each item, worrying if the look was unique, inspiring, or conveying a particular mood. Now I feel much more comfortable in just showing you ME, and it doesn't have to be tied to some perception I want to put out there. I used to obsess over every little detail, and God forbid I repeat wearing the same things too frequently. I've seen the light finally this year and now I realize the value I'm getting out of simply documenting the things that I truly love to wear, regardless of how often I've already shown them to you. I know I've spoken on this a lot lately, and I sound like a broken record but the fact that I featured this kimono just two weeks ago and am sharing it again had me thinking about all this. I know, deep thoughts.

Speaking of which, it's still incredibly hot and smokey here due to all the fires but we are fortunate to be safe in the area we live in. I've been keeping everyone in my prayers, all the families, animals, and firefighters battling the flames. I hope you will too.

8.07.2018

It's usually around August where I start feeling a bit uninspired with my wardrobe. August and September are the hottest months of the year here, and while a lot of bloggers are previewing what's to come in Fall fashion, I'm over here reaching for anything that's loose, comfy, and breathable! I'll admit that even wearing jeans is a risky idea, but I live in denim so I do what I can to stay indoors in the air conditioning - such a fabulous invention!

But lately, it's back to basics with a pretty cold shoulder blouse and my most worn-in sandals. Both are older, but they are still on heavy rotation this Summer.

Building a wardrobe from a solid foundation of basics is a great way to make sure that your clothes work for you (although we do work for our clothes). I've really made an effort this year to pare down my buying, and before I do buy something new, I ask myself how many ways I can wear it?  Does it fill a void in my wardrobe? If the answer is yes, then I can be confident that I'll get my money's worth. As I've gotten older, I know that basics don't automatically equal boring. Play with color and print, and you'll have something that's practical, hopefully something that lasts a long time, and you can add your own touches to make it feel special.

How do you guys feel about fashion in August? Every post I read yesterday dealt with this topic! Hey, just keep me submerged in water until mid-September thankyouverymuch.

I rarely tell you ladies that you need a certain item I feature on my blog. I try to write from a perspective that we're all friends here, and I'm simply sharing little pieces of myself with you. I've never been much of a salesperson - I don't feel comfortable pushing products, and I don't want you here just for clicks and commission. Don't get me wrong, I'm always grateful when you like something enough to buy it for yourself, but in the great scheme of things, I don't rely on this blog for money or I would have stepped it up ages ago. My hope has always been that an outfit I style will inspire you in your own wardrobe. However, with all that being said - everyone needs this dress!

*Size Up One Size*

This ruched body-con dress comes in multiple colors, but I chose to go with a neutral. It's made from a stretchy cotton/poly blend, so it's incredibly soft and comfortable. The ruching at one side conceals a not-so-flat tummy while still showcasing your curves. I used to be so self-conscious of my hips and thighs that even the thought of a body-con dress made me cringe. I still prefer looser fit and flare styles, but this dress has made me appreciate my curves in a way I never have before. It's okay to own it! I truly think our bodies are amazing, and there's no reason to ever be ashamed of them!

Beauty // It Cosmetics Blush, Charlotte Tilbury Lip Kit

I added this gorgeous ivory floral kimono for a light layer, but how cute will this dress be later in the year with a longer cardigan? I can't wait to style it in cooler weather.

This outfit was taken last week before Nate and I went to a "speak easy" in Old Town. It was such a cool experience! I'm fascinated by the prohibition era. My great grandmother was a flapper (seriously) and I like to imagine myself dancing to Cole Porter or Louis Armstrong. I think I would have fit right in!

The thing I love most about Summer is that everywhere I go, I like to pretend that I'm on vacation.  And every Summer Temecula gets an influx of tourists, especially out in the wineries where buses of people are constantly in rotation and parties hop from one winery to the next. On this particular night, Nate and I went out to dinner but stopped at one for a quick glass of wine. The path leading from the hotel to the winery itself was empty, so I figured it was a good time to snap some photos of my outfit. This dress (last seen here) is unfortunately sold out, but I found a beautiful option with a similar silhouette in case anyone is interested. I love easy dresses that can be dressed up with pretty heels, or dressed down as I've done here. I added my new poppy pouch from Cult Gaia that's still pricey on sale, but as I said on Friday, I'm over the moon for this dreamy pastel print and I just had to have it. I think it'll be perfect in Tulum next month.

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! I'm linking up with Rachelle today.

7.10.2018

Everyone seems to be completely obsessed with stripes, and since grabbing this kimono during yet another neverending LOFT sale, I guess I'm beginning to see why! Stripes are a timid fashion lover's dream because they go with everything and can easily be mixed in with several prints and colors. Think of them as a neutral, just like leopard! You can even wear stripes WITH leopard. I know, crazy.

Like most of the country, we are in the midst of a heatwave in California (it was almost 120 degrees two days ago). The only items I'm reaching for until the heat breaks are these old denim shorts and basically any sleeveless top. I've been wearing my Soludos espadrilles in place of sandals to add a bit more interest to my simple Summer outfits and here, I love the effect of the double stripes. I'm not crazy about how my legs look when I wear shorts, but a longer open cardigan or kimono creates the illusion of a slimmer appearance.

I hope you are enjoying your Summer! Mine has been great so far, which means I've been neglecting to snap photos of my outfits. My blogging schedule has been off, but I'm trying to get back to a steady pace. Thank you guys as always for stopping by and reading!

7.03.2018

I've had this blue and white bell-sleeve dress for over two years, and it's become a staple in my Summer wardrobe. I had no intention when I bought it of even keeping it around for long; I thought it would surely fall apart after a few washes. Lucky for me, it still looks brand new and it's the easiest, most comfortable item I own (seriously, I've worn it as a nightgown on camping trips!)

I'm sure you're familiar with it but just in case, I've styled it here and here too!

This past weekend, Nate and I headed to old town Temecula to walk around and enjoy the weather.

Wearing // Old Lush dress, Steve Madden sandals, Clare V bag similar here, Elizabeth Stone necklace

We have so many fun events coming up this Summer that the temptation to buy a new outfit for each is very real. But that's not practical, nor is it affordable for many people. With that in mind,  I have a question - How do you make older favorites look new and fresh again? And another question, how can we elevate our daily style when life gets busy and the last thing we want to worry about is our appearance?

In a world where shopping for a new outfit is literally a click away, what are some ways in which you can look put-together and polished with relatively little effort and money? Well, I've got some thoughts...

Manicured nails: Maybe it's just me, but I always notice people's hands. Short, manicured nails instantly elevate your look! If you don't have time to keep your nails painted, buff them out to ensure they look shiny and healthy. Same goes for your feet.

A healthy glow: You don't have to wear a full face of makeup, I definitely don't! But, a little tinted moisturizer and concealer on problem areas gives me the confidence to leave the house in a pinch.

Clean hair: I hate washing my hair as much as I hate going to the dentist, but let's face it ladies. Hair makes a big impact, and having clean hair is at least half the battle. Use dry shampoo to extend the life of a blow-out, but if that doesn't work, wash your hair an extra time per week. I'm sorry but greasy hair never looks polished. Don't worry so much about the actual style, just keep it clean.

Signature scent: One of my favorite compliments to receive is when someone tells me I smell good. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because scent is so personal? Do you have anyone in your life that you associate a scent with? I do, and I love the idea of wearing a signature perfume that can be uniquely tied to YOU. What's mine? Kai.

Great accessories: Pay special attention to your shoes, bags, and jewelry. They really are the key to looking put-together without having to buy a whole new wardrobe. They can transform say, an old favorite dress, into something that looks good as new.

A smile: If all else fails and you're having a bad hair day, bad skin day, just a bad day in general, a smile makes everyone look, and more importantly feel, more beautiful. I promise.

How do you elevate your daily style?

I hope everyone in the U.S. has a great holiday tomorrow! We are spending it in San Diego with friends and I can't wait! I'll see you back here on Friday 💋

6.29.2018

Summer 2018 made its official debut last week, and as I post this, I'm looking through photos of our recent trip to Arizona. I hadn't been to the river in years, and a camping adventure with friends was exactly the perfect way to kick off the season. Our dog Nettie loved the water, and I'm hoping we can take her back every year and make it a tradition.

But let's bring it back to fashion! My favorite part of any season is of course the clothes! Summer stands out the most to me in terms of accessories. All I really need for a Summer wardrobe are some basic tops, a couple pairs of denim shorts, kimonos to add an extra layer in case I'm stuck inside with A/C, and a handful of dresses. It gets so extremely hot here that after about a month in, I struggle to come up with new ways to wear things and that's when accessories really come into play.

Here are the major trends of Summer 2018 that I'm wearing:

1. Opal
adds a touch of bohemian whimsy

2. White
a neutral that pops against sunkissed skin
Greek Sandals

3. Fringe
playful movement to bring attention to the face
Stella & Dot sold out, but similar here on sale

4. Nautical
Espadrilles for going on an adventure

Other accessory trends I'm craving:
turbands
straw bags
medallion necklaces
