I went off the rails last week at Nordstrom. Literally. I remember two years ago around Fall, I saw these beautiful plaid shirts by the brand Rails and immediately thought, okay I'll get one. They can't be more than 100 dollars right? Wrong! They are in fact a bit pricey, so I decided to try my luck at finding a good dupe. The problem was, I wasn't satisfied with what I found, and often the fit was off. Fast forward to my trip last week to Nordstrom, when the SA brought me the holy grail of plaid/flannel/modern day 90's grunge rock uniform. I touched it you guys. I touched this perfect plaid shirt and I knew I was dead, I knew my bank account was in for a huge dent. So I tried it on, and it was like slipping into a cloud. The softest fabric I have felt in a long time. I had to have it. Even though I was on a mission that day to find Summer clothes, I couldn't pass up my Kurt Cobain loving fantasy. Even Nate loves it (I think he wants to wear it himself). Which is definitely odd because my style is feminine. To make it more girly, less boyish for my taste, I added a lace camisole underneath and voila...boy meets girl.

My friend asked me the other day about an event she was attending, and what she should wear. I think she expected me to have some amazing advice because she knows I blog and so obviously that makes me an expert in the field right? Um, no it does not. Anyway, my advice to everyone (always) is pretty simple - wear what you love. Even if people have seen you in an outfit fifty times, even if you are unsure of what others will be wearing to that same event. Just wear what makes you feel good! Are you a jeans and tee-shirt kinda girl? Then wear that! You can dress it up with shoes and accessories. Not into the casual look? Wear the prettiest dress you own because it makes you feel nothing short of fabulous. We get so caught up sometimes in our appearance that we actually do ourselves a disservice. There's nothing worse than going somewhere in an outfit that you're pulling up, pulling down, or just plain uncomfortable in. For the bachelorette in Vegas, I wore kitten heels because I knew I'd be doing a ton of walking. I didn't care that most of the other ladies I was with wore sky high heels because that's what they wanted to wear. I may have been the shortest person in the club, but I was also damn comfortable and I didn't look like a baby giraffe stumbling across the dance floor. I tried being that baby giraffe when I was in my twenties and thinking back, I know how ridiculous I must have seemed. Moral of the story? Just be yourself. You're already beautiful. Own it.

I was introduced to online retailer Thirdlove who inspired me to write this post using the care guide they shared with me.

The better you take care of your nice things, the longer they will last, and ultimately the more money you'll save in the long run. I had been contemplating doing a post such as this one anyway, because now that I'm getting older and I try to avoid fast fashion chains as often as I can, I prefer to downsize my wardrobe with items that are of quality. That's not to say that I don't still love popping into stores like H&M and Forever 21. You don't have to buy expensive things in order to look your best! But, no matter how you feel about style and no matter your budget, I do think it's important to take care of the things you love and cherish most. Here are my tips, followed by a really convenient chart that Thirdlove has created for even more helpful advice that I am going to be utilizing.

1. Handbags & Leather Goods
I like to keep my nicer leather handbags and shoes in the dust bags or boxes that they were delivered in. I also store them on a shelf so they are out of the way of my crazy puppy! I then stuff them with paper so they maintain their shape and don't begin to slouch. Use a leather protector and spray them before use so they don't collect dirt or stains. I like this one that I buy at Target:

2. Suede
The same thing goes for suede. Suede is extremely attractive to dirt, and I can't tell you how important it is to always use a stain guard on this material as well. It's just as delicate, if not more so, than leather. I use the same Kiwi protector for these items.

3. Jeans
I don't wash my jeans after every wear. In fact, I often will wear them quite a few times before throwing them in the washing machine. I always wash them on the delicate cycle, inside out, cold water, and low heat in the dryer. I've read that it's best to hang-dry jeans, but this is one rule I just can't follow. I find that they are still in great condition if I follow those steps. Also, zip them before cleaning so they don't snag other clothes you may throw in with them.

4. Line-Dry as many clothing items as possible.
I do this with practically all of my tops, skirts, sweaters, and dresses. Anything delicate needs to stay clear from the heat of the dryer.

5. Storing favorite jewelry
I like to store my jewels in the same manner I store my shoes and bags - in their original little dust bags. If not, place them in plastic baggies. Not only will this help prevent discoloration and tarnish, but it also makes your pieces easy to see in your collection! I recently started doing this and I love the organization factor.

6. Intimates
When it comes to your bras, don't place them in the dryer either. Lay them flat to dry. I also love to keep pretty soaps in my intimates drawer so they smell amazing! I like the pretty soaps you find at Anthropologie.

7. No time to iron? Hang your garment in your bathroom while you take a shower for an instant steam. Handheld steamers are also my secret, because I hate ironing and I find steaming much easier and faster.

8. Switch bags often.
This may sound ridiculous to some, but I try to rotate my bags every couple of months so that each one gets a chance to be stored away, and wear and tear is less likely to occur. Give them a little break!

Now here are some more ideas from Thirdlove:

You can't include a list of wardrobe staples without great fitting under garments. Trust me, I just got re-fitted a couple months back and I was totally guilty of wearing the wrong bra size! It happens. I've seen great reviews of Thirdlove on YouTube, and I plan on buying one of their pretty tee-shirt bras. If you're also interested, use the code STAPLES to get 15% off any purchase!

Do you have any tips for protecting your wardrobe?

I love the trend we've been seeing everywhere over the last few months of a slouchy, open trench coat. Or are they called dusters? I guess I should probably know the exact term, but either way, I adore the look of a relaxed longer coat over an outfit. I've worn it with jeans and on top of a dress, and I am convinced it ties together any outfit rather nicely. It's that extra polished layer that turns a basic look from mediocre (dare I say boring) into something a bit more special. Not to mention that with the April and May showers that typically come with Spring, having a light layer to cover your arms is a must! You never know when you'll be caught in a downpour. Trust me. It happened to me last week and I looked like a drowned rat. I should keep this coat in my car. Noted.

I'm still recovering from my crazy weekend in Vegas celebrating my sister-in-law, so forgive the lack of writing. I have so many posts coming up that are fairly long-winded so just consider this a little break from the thoughts in my head I like to share with you :)
