As I get older, I approach style very differently than I used to. I used to dress mostly to please others, and to convey an image of who I wanted to be. Now that I'm in my thirties, I dress mostly to please myself, and to convey an image of who I am presently. In other words, what you see is what you get. And that makes getting dressed everyday so much more enjoyable.

Whatever your style may be, there are certain classic pieces that look amazing on everyone and are sure to save you time and effort. Consider them the building blocks of a practical, thoughtful, and yes even chic wardrobe.

Key Pieces For Building A Classic Wardrobe

Neutral-colored soft trench coat: A soft trench coat is obviously less structured than a traditional trench coat, but it still looks just as polished. The one I'm wearing is a few years old from Macy's, but brands like Express and Asos have had versions every year. I find the draping of these coats extremely flattering.

Stripe t-shirt or top: Who doesn't own at least one striped top? Put it to use as often as possible!

Perfectly lived-in denim: There's nothing like your favorite pair of perfectly soft, slouchy, lived-in jeans. It doesn't matter the brand, as long as they fit like a glove. These are my most-worn pair of Old Navy rockstar jeans, and I wear them weekly. The lighter wash and (very slight) distressing make for an instant classic pair.

Red bag: Red is such a power color, and a great leather crossbody bag can take you from day to night and from the office to happy hour. It really adds instant polish to any look.

Pointy-toe flats: Not everyone likes flats, and not everybody finds them comfortable, but I've been a pointy-toe flats girl since Stacy London championed them on "What Not To Wear" about a decade ago. They're great for lengthening your legs when you're not into heels.

Wear all of these pieces together, add a current trend to break up the look, or mix them in with your other wardrobe favorites. Classic doesn't have to = boring!

If there's one item that I've been absolutely living in lately, it's this plush-knit cardigan. I've had it for awhile, and even wore it on the blog over my favorite fitted dress. Now that it's Winter and layering is a must, I reach for it weekly. What I love about cardigans is that they are universally flattering on every body type, they can be worn both to the office or while lounging, and they are just so simple to style. I personally favor longer, open cardigans with a looser fit but...these can also drown out my figure i.e. my waist. This is where a belt comes in.

I had completely forgotten what a great styling tool a belt can be, particularly if you have a curvy lower body. In order to accentuate those curves I added a wrap-style leather belt, and cinched it in at the smallest part of my natural waist. Styling note: I think in order for this to work best, an oversized cardigan is key. It gives my denim outfit some dimension and interest, and the effect makes me feel so feminine. Do you ladies wear belts frequently? I hope I've convinced you to give this style strategy a try!

Just a quick life update: our dog went into surgery on Monday and although she's uncomfortable and in some pain, she's recovering just fine. It's her second ACL surgery and I'm amazed by her toughness and strength. I could learn from that.

Monday also happened to be my friend Gina's birthday, and I had such a great time celebrating her over the weekend along with our husbands. We always have fun on our date nights. Gina and I blab about clothes and blogging, while the guys blab about pretty much everything else!

I said a couple weeks ago that I would be saving my moto jackets for cooler weather. Well, let's just say I couldn't resist wearing this one. It's THE BEST jacket for Fall and there are a few reasons why...

First. I just love the look of a moto jacket to pull together an outfit. It feels a bit younger and edgier than your typical cozy cardigan, and I think one transitions easily from day to night. Great for a date!

Second, this moto jacket in particular is a nice weight for in-between weather. It's not true suede, so it's much less heavier than the real thing. I have one from BlankNYC and although I absolutely adore the fit and color, it's quite substantial so it's been designated as my Winter coat. The one I'm wearing here is much more versatile.

And third, this moto jacket comes in several beautiful colors. I love them so much that I grabbed one in burgundy as well.  For reference, I sized down one size. My jacket collection is small but useful. I can pull any of them out and each one goes with everything from dresses to denim.

Are you as into moto jackets as I am?! Linking up with Pink Sole today.

I rarely tell you ladies that you need a certain item I feature on my blog. I try to write from a perspective that we're all friends here, and I'm simply sharing little pieces of myself with you. I've never been much of a salesperson - I don't feel comfortable pushing products, and I don't want you here just for clicks and commission. Don't get me wrong, I'm always grateful when you like something enough to buy it for yourself, but in the great scheme of things, I don't rely on this blog for money or I would have stepped it up ages ago. My hope has always been that an outfit I style will inspire you in your own wardrobe. However, with all that being said - everyone needs this dress!

*Size Up One Size*

This ruched body-con dress comes in multiple colors, but I chose to go with a neutral. It's made from a stretchy cotton/poly blend, so it's incredibly soft and comfortable. The ruching at one side conceals a not-so-flat tummy while still showcasing your curves. I used to be so self-conscious of my hips and thighs that even the thought of a body-con dress made me cringe. I still prefer looser fit and flare styles, but this dress has made me appreciate my curves in a way I never have before. It's okay to own it! I truly think our bodies are amazing, and there's no reason to ever be ashamed of them!

I added this gorgeous ivory floral kimono for a light layer, but how cute will this dress be later in the year with a longer cardigan? I can't wait to style it in cooler weather.

This outfit was taken last week before Nate and I went to a "speak easy" in Old Town. It was such a cool experience! I'm fascinated by the prohibition era. My great grandmother was a flapper (seriously) and I like to imagine myself dancing to Cole Porter or Louis Armstrong. I think I would have fit right in!

There's no simpler way to look put together than a beautiful dress in a timeless polka dot print. It's been years since I worked in an office full-time, but this was essentially my style philosophy when I was applying for jobs and internships in college. When I was at a loss for what to wear, a dress was my go-to. To this day, it still is! Add some pretty (but comfortable) heels, a practical tote bag and you're set.

I sometimes miss doing workwear looks. For those of you ladies working in a professional office setting, I hope you enjoy and take some inspiration from this post! Unfortunately, the dress is currently sold-out but I've seen really similar options at all price points. The sky is the limit.

Naturally you don't have to save this formula for your 9-5. I love wearing dresses everywhere year-round, but especially in the Summer. I mean there are only so many options!

I only own a handful of skirts in my closet, and almost all of them are high-waisted. The one I'm wearing below is a fairly recent purchase from April, and the fit is so perfect that now I want everything that House of Harlow makes! It's fully lined, has a zipper on the side, and is the sweetest shade of pink.

The only problem, how should I style it?

My general rule for skirts is to pair them with a simple blouse, tucked in. This looks the most polished and proportional on most women. I tried a few options, but they all bunched up terribly, so I went for a white t-shirt instead and knotted it at the side. I loved the effect! The side knot gives the illusion of a tiny waist, and the ruching it creates is also slimming. Plus, no worries about adjusting my top throughout the day! I think it's perfect for casual Summer outfits, and now I want to try it with a maxi skirt I don't get enough use from.

What do you think of the knot tee trend? It's probably on its way out and I'm just now getting it!

A few years ago, I loved wearing just one statement piece to dress up my everyday outfits. Remember the big floral necklaces, colorful cocktail rings, and chunky bracelets? Well I've mostly abandoned those in favor of dainty, delicate, and wearable pieces that can be mixed and matched, layered, or just worn as part of your signature style. I've always enjoyed the idea of collecting unique jewelry that is so simple and understated that you don't even need to take it off at the end of the day. It almost becomes a part of you.

I used to get so caught up in trendy pieces, and it's still tempting at times. But for the first time ever, I'm really happy with my downsized jewelry collection and I'm more particular about buying anything new. My rule is this: If I can't wear it on a daily basis, I know it's not for me. That doesn't mean I won't wear something more colorful or bold, but it has to have some versatility.

I saw this sweater during a recent shopping trip and fell in love with the bows on the back. I didn't have time to try it on so I went with my usual medium petite and it is definitely a generous fit! I wish I would have gone down a size but after wearing it all weekend, I think it's evident that I'm keeping it. I decided to go casual glam with my favorite lived-in jeans and classic Chanel ballerinas. In all honesty, this was one of those weekends where I had no idea what to wear, and I always go back to simple pieces when that happens. Nate has been working crazy hours, so the last thing I want to do is fuss about getting ready during his days off. No time for that!

It's been a couple months since I last did this but here is what I'm currently...

1. Planning - A fun girl's day at Kendra Scott that my friend Gina is hosting. Two of my girlfriends are coming along and I can't wait to add a new KS piece to my collection. I'm thinking something in gold and turquoise?

2. Seeing - how I do in one of my copy editing classes. I'm working on my final exam this week, and then I'll have to wait to find out my final grade. No pressure.

3. Making - new recipes from Trader Joe's. I've gotten ideas from their website. Honestly, the easiest way to switch things up is to add new seasonings. The chile lime seasoning is a recent discovery and it's SO good on my morning eggs!

4. Pretending - I have it more together than I really do. Fake it til you make it!

5. Wearing - a standard uniform that includes my sezane bag, cozy pullover sweaters, and flats (see above). However, I have a few Spring things in mind and I can't wait to share with you what I've been eyeing. I plan on doing a Spring capsule post soon.

Wearing // Similar sweater, Topshop jeans, Similar pumps, Similar bag,  Nordstrom scarf                     Beauty // Lips in M.A.C. "Hot Gossip"

There are a few classic color combinations that everyone should have in their Winter wardrobe; black and white, grey and red, and my personal favorite - black and camel. It always translates chic! This outfit looked beautiful on its own, but in place of wearing a long pendant necklace or other jewelry, I decided to put my leopard scarf to use. I originally saw it on Gina and Amy Ann (linked below), and I'm happy I added it to my closet during the holidays. You could easily wear something like this to work, or perhaps on a night out when you want to look more polished than your regular jeans + sweater uniform (which has been mine all month long!)

I'm still nursing a terrible cold/infection so I'm keeping it short today. Just a reminder to take care of yourselves this season!

Beauty // Lips in Clinique Black Honey

I got this check mini dress right after Christmas, and this outfit is head-to-toe what I wore on new years eve. Yes, I skipped the usual glitz and shine and just decided to go with something understated for my friend's party. I'm really loving the plaid trend. Asos has quite a few options, but this dress caught my eye in the petite department. Great for layering and extremely versatile depending on the season. I think it'll look nice in the Spring with a long cardigan and kitten heels. If you are currently in the midst of snow (hello bomb cyclone) pairing a dress like this with thick tights and a coat would be polished enough for work.

Speaking of which, I hope my friends on the east coast and beyond are staying safe and warm! I can count on one hand how many times I've even seen snow. Ridiculous but true!

I wore this blazer twice over the long Thanksgiving weekend, and it's hands-down the current favorite in my closet. Out of all the looks I have planned for the holidays, this is definitely the most versatile. Trust me, you need some velvet in your life!

Velvet

Wear it to:
A holiday party or dinner
Date night
Girls night
New Years Eve
Anywhere!

Wear it more casually as I've done here, or drape it over a dress (it would pair perfectly on top of my first holiday idea).

Zara pumps, similar here & here
Stella & Dot covet necklaces (here & here)

There are so many beautiful trends making the rounds, but velvet is the one I'm crazy over.  It doesn't matter whether it's a top, skirt, or even heels, anything in this sumptuous fabric adds just the right amount of elegance. And the best part is that it doesn't seem to be going anywhere! Velvet is still going to be big well into next year, so you can keep the chic going long after the holidays are gone.

I hope you ladies had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and thank you to those who entered the Nordstrom giveaway last week! I'm jealous of the winner!

With Thanksgiving just around the corner and the holidays coming so quickly, I wanted to provide some ideas that can be worn on these special occasions. I know we all celebrate in our own way - some of us hit the party circuit, while some of us hibernate by the fire. No matter what your style is or what your plans are, I'll be featuring three distinct looks that hopefully will inspire you as we get closer to the holidays. First up...

The Lace Dress

Wear it to:
 Fall or Winter wedding
Company or corporate dinner party
Any "formal" event
New Years Eve

The lace dress is probably my favorite, and I've worn it to so many events like weddings, anniversaries, and a girls' night out. The key here is in its versatility. Lace looks formal, but it isn't as dramatic as say, sequins. The timeless elegance will never go out of style, and you'll be surprised at how much wear you can get from a simple lace dress. This one in particular epitomizes my personal style pretty clearly. It's a gorgeous jewel tone, the silhouette flatters my curves, and the length is so feminine. I feel that it's fairly universal and not only will you get compliments from your significant other, but your fussy aunt from out of town may just do a double-take as well :)

I'm loving the polka dot trend! Wait, are polka dots a trend? It seems like a fairly classic print to me, although it comes around every couple of years.

A swingy little dress like this is a curvy girl's dream. The jersey fabric feels as soft as pj's, but it's great for work and play. I love this style in particular because the silhouette skims the body in all the right places and allows for lots of movement. You can dress it up with pumps, or dress it down with ankle boots and flats. Pick your favorite accessories and you have a complete outfit you probably won't want to take off!

How are you ladies doing this week? I'm tackling my to-do list one item at a time and am feeling productive! After taking a couple weeks off from yoga, I'm back at it tonight. I can see why people get addicted - it really does have an impact on me, more so mentally than physically which is what I need. If your mind isn't in the right place, it affects your entire well-being.

I'll be back on Thursday with a fun post on my new Fall/Winter bag so be sure to come back then!
