My Fall Shopping List & Packing For NYC

It's finally beginning to feel ever so slightly like Fall around here, although it's supposed to be over 80 today! We go back and forth a lot, but even if the weather isn't cooperative, I'm slowly putting away my Summer accessories and shoes in favor of more seasonally appropriate options just to get myself in the mood. My friend pointed out that just because California doesn't experience four seasons doesn't mean you can't create your own version of them. All the more reason to actually. And she's totally right.

I like a very casual bohemian style in Summer, but come Fall, I'm all about classic pieces. Think dark denim, chic flats, long cardigans, cable knit sweaters, and plenty of texture. I have most of these basics in my wardrobe already, but there are a few things I'd like to buy not only for Fall at home but also before I head to New York City in just a couple weeks. It's fast approaching and I really need to get on top of it! usually I have more time to prepare for a trip since Nate and I aren't exactly world travelers, but I can't express enough how excited I am to just go without overthinking it.

These are the things on my current wish list. I'm unsure if they'll all work for me, but I'm going shopping next week to try some on in person. I'll report back after my trip so I can explain in detail everything I packed and wore.

Thankfully, my shopping list is fairly small because as I said before, I already own some great essentials. I do worry about getting cold in New York so I plan on bringing some layering pieces like a scarf and some tights. I know layering is the key! Our trip is less then a week long so rotating between 7 or 8 pieces total will be easy. It's all about comfort, practicality, and obviously feeling as put-together as I can because it's NYC after all.

The items (or similar) below are all coming with me, and they're all perfect basics that I think you will love for Fall and beyond. I've worn them all in various posts, especially the Sezane bag that I still can't get enough of!

Ann Taylor Dress & Floral Kimono

Nate and I celebrated our 6 year wedding anniversary on September 21st, and we kept it pretty low-key. I wasn't sure what the plans were because it wasn't my year to plan...we rotate! One year I'm in charge of what we do to celebrate, the next year Nate does. It was still pretty warm out so I went with my favorite Ann Taylor dress (last seen here) and added a floral kimono to bring in an extra layer since nights are getting much cooler now. I can't stress enough how much I love re-wearing things but switching up the styling to make it feel more current. I typically wear kimonos with a tank or t-shirt and jeans, but they also look great over dresses.

Aside from cardigans, I think kimonos are great transition pieces for Fall. Most people associate them with Summer, but if you live in a warmer climate they are perfect for those in-between days.

So after dinner, Nate actually surprised me with a gift - not something we do - with two plane tickets to visit New York City next month! If you've followed me from the beginning, then you know we went to NYC in 2010 after my college graduation. It was a very short trip though, we were only there for 3 days total, so going back now for almost an entire week is such a treat and one that nearly brought me to tears. 

We have friends across the bridge in New Jersey that we will be staying with, and I'm so excited to see them too! I honestly have so much outfit planning to do right?! But more on that later. and please feel free to give me any tips or recommendations in the meantime!

The In-between

90 degrees and sunny, but make it Fall. Um, okay...

I wish I were better at transitional style, especially from Summer to Fall. The whole concept is sort of baffling if you live in a warmer climate and the truth is, Fall isn't really a season here in southern California. We get some relief from the heat now and then but by the time I get to enjoy it, Christmas is right around the corner.

The in-between can feel so frustrating when you can't decide what to wear! I spent a good amount of time yesterday trying on different outfits, feeling a bit defeated. But instead of throwing my hands up and complaining, I'm trying my best to embrace this predicament. I lived in dresses all Summer long, and just because my social media feeds are filled with lovely Autumnal outfits doesn't mean I can't wear my own version of Fall.

Here are some tips I use: 

1) Switch out your Summer accessories. Instead of carrying your favorite woven beach tote or straw bag, pull out a nice leather (or vegan leather) shoulder bag. I typically reach for black or jewel-toned, but the blush Madewell tote I bought during Summer still works! More structured bags work very well in Fall and always look chic.

2) I also begin wearing flats again this time of year instead of sandals. They instantly read Fall to me. Ankle boots are naturally a good option as well. I love wearing mine with mini dresses for a more leg lengthening look.

3) When in doubt, the use of color will transition your wardrobe. Think orange, rust, mustard, olive, navy. Prints such as leopard, cheetah, and snakeskin are all big this year so incorporating them into your outfit is the easiest way to feel more seasonally appropriate regardless of your particular climate.

4) Layer, layer, layer. None of the outfits I created above are groundbreaking, I just added a jacket or cardigan to the dresses I've lived in this Summer. It really is that simple! Mornings and evenings are starting to get chilly, so having the option to add or remove a layer is practical and stylish.

5) If it's too warm for long sleeves, a kimono is a lightweight layering piece that still adds some visual interest to shorts, t-shirts, camisoles, and jeans. Even better if it's in a traditional Fall color.


I know retail calendars want us all to rush through each season, but that doesn't mean we have to! Changing a few details is all it takes to make the shift.

My 35th Birthday

My 35th birthday was yesterday, and it was fabulous! I didn't have any set plans, which I guess is kind of unusual considering that I'm at the halfway mark of my 30's, and I originally thought a few months ago that I'd do something big to celebrate. But maybe that's more of a signal that I truly am at a different stage in my life and just waking up in the morning, taking a deep breath, and being grateful that I'm still here is enough. Now more than ever, I know that life is a gift and nothing else matters except love in all its messy, complicated forms.

I thought about writing a big thought-provoking post about turning 35 - what I've learned so far, things I'd like to accomplish in the next 5 years, any regrets I've had or pearls of wisdom I could offer you...I just can't seem to gather them at the moment, so until I finally can, I'll just say that I'm thankful for all of you who stop by and read this blog. The confidence it's given me over the years, especially during really hard times, has proven invaluable. Thank you.

Now onto the outfit.

Some of you may be wondering if I've lost all of my pants. This is probably the 7th or 8th dress I've worn on and off the internet since the beginning of Summer, and while I totally realize I should switch things up a bit, I can't stop wearing them! Dresses are just SO easy, and nothing else makes me feel more put together. This is another little number by the Aussie brand MinkPink, and I bought it on sale from Shopbop a couple months ago with my birthday or wedding anniversary in mind. I love the flutter sleeves, the tie detail at the bust, and the way it hugs my curves. Everyone wants to feel good on their birthday and this dress did just that!

The dress is perfect for Summer, but I'm happy to report that it can easily transition to warmer Fall days. It was super windy yesterday and there was a chill in the air, so I added this new cardigan on top and it worked well together.

Nate took me to a restaurant in old town Temecula called The Nightingale. It was our first time, but it most certainly will not be our last! We didn't have a reservation but I recommend one on Friday and Saturday nights because it's a pretty small space. The atmosphere and decor were really romantic, the staff was friendly, and the food was delicious! We split the squid ink spaghetti and also got a cheese board because I live for them. I also loved their lavender infused cocktail - surprisingly good!

This might be the best drink to have when you're feeling stressed ;) Almost too pretty to drink.

Orange Is The New Black // Late Summer Into Fall

Another day, another orange dress! I realize that my last outfit post was also an orange dress, but it just goes to show that a) it's still insanely hot in SoCal so lightweight pieces are a must and b) orange really is the new black! At least for me.

A couple weeks ago I walked into a local boutique looking for a candle, and I walked out with this flirty little dress instead. Growing up, I hated the color orange - absolutely hated it. So naturally that means I love it now as an adult. It looks glowing on freshly bronzed skin, pairs well with neutrals, and livens up your entire wardrobe. It may not be the most versatile hue, but consider it a fun addition that can instantly lift your mood! I think people overlook orange because it's so bold, but as someone who is introverted, I'm actually surprised at how much I'm gravitating towards vibrant color. 

Orange is the perfect late Summer into Fall shade because it looks great with leopard print, dark florals, and it compliments colors like rust and brick red. It's all about the mix! Most of us may not be able to transition to Fall clothing just yet, but planning what you'd like to wear is key. I always do an inventory of what I need in order to fill any gaps in my wardrobe and proceed from there. For instance, I don't own any nice black pants so a pair is on my current "to buy" list. On the other hand, I do own an olive utility jacket so even though those are making the rounds in stores, I can steer firmly away from buying a new one.

Enjoying Summer In A Long Sleeve Wrap Dress

I first wore this dress back in Spring when Nate and I went on a weekend getaway to Palm Springs. I wore it once more after that, but as soon as Summer arrived, I didn't think I'd have much use for it until the weather cooled down. Luckily, there's a big drop in temperature here once the sun sets, so I decided to give it a go again for a night out last week. I love little dresses with long sleeves - there's just something so sophisticated about them! I also love that these sleeves are sheer, so you get the look without too much added warmth. Although I love the bright orange color now, I have a feeling I'll be wearing this dress even more come Fall.

But that won't be for awhile!

I may be in the minority here, but I'm not ready to say goodbye to Summer. I've been inundated with cardigans, tunics, jeans, and booties on my social media feeds for what seems like weeks now and I am not here for it. I totally understand the excitement surrounding a new season, but it's physically impossible for most of us to wear anything other than sundresses, shorts, and swimsuits. Honestly, the mere thought of a sweater makes me itch! I love Summer, and I don't want it to end. For the first time in years I actually managed to get a tan, and I plan on showing it off until I turn back into my pasty, ghostly, self come October. Summer makes me genuinely happy, it always has. It gives me a sense of freedom that I don't normally feel throughout the year, and it makes me want to try new things and experience a little adventure. So while you won't see Fall content on this blog anytime soon, I hope you'll be in the moment with me as I continue savoring one of the best Summers I've ever had.

Timeless Gold Necklaces For Everyday Elegance

If there's one thing I've learned after ten years of documenting my style through blogging, it's that I really value quality over quantity. Trends come and go, and even though they're fun to participate in, ultimately I want a wardrobe that makes me look and feel my best. Maybe it has a little something to do with age. Now that I'm well into my thirties, I gravitate towards timeless elegant pieces that will last for years. This is especially true when it comes to jewelry.

For a few years I tried out statement necklaces, giant cocktail rings, and heavy chandelier earrings. They made for some interesting conversation, but those pieces never really felt like "me." Most of them broke or tarnished after a few wears. These days, I'm all about understated gold jewelry. In particular, delicate gold necklaces that can be layered, worn alone, or mixed in with absolutely anything. Gold necklaces add just the right amount of sparkle, and they draw the eyes up toward your face. I swear they make your skin glow! I love layering two at a time for instant polish to any outfit. They can elevate a simple t-shirt and jeans, or they can effortlessly add a classic touch to a more complicated outfit.

For example, the cobalt dress I'm wearing here has a lot going on - ruffles, tassels at the neckline as well as some on the sides. The risk is piling on too many accessories and looking overdone. Who wants all that fussiness in the middle of Summer? My dainty gold jewelry adds subtle polish without taking attention away from the dress. I then added some neutral sandals and a small tote for dinner at our favorite winery.

 My newest acquisition is my zodiac sign which is Virgo. Although I'm not a huge believer in astrology, I've always been fascinated by the concept and I love the understated elegance of the necklace. I decided to layer it with my diamond initial necklace, and I think they pair so nicely together! Of course, I still wear this sunburst coin constantly and almost always with this shimmering strand of tiny gold discs. With so many unique retailers and artisans out there, finding your own everyday elegance has never been easier.

Dressing Down A Feminine Pleated Skirt

In the blink of an eye, it's August!

We came back from Ohio last Wednesday, and the heat promptly greeted us in San Diego. I really thought the humidity in Ohio would get to me, but it was actually pretty mild in comparison to years past. August and September are by far the hottest months in Temecula, so like clockwork, this is the time where I have to start getting a little creative with my style and beauty routines. Nothing fussy, just simple, practical, breathable...you get the idea! When Summer's in full swing, it's hard to imagine getting too done up. Instead, I focus on dressing certain items in my closet down so that I look and feel more comfortable and relaxed.

I've worn this pretty pleated skirt countless times since I bought it last year, but this was the first time I dressed it down with flat sandals and a small straw bag. My inclination with skirts is usually to dress them up with heels, but there's no reason why I can't wear them with more casual accessories. I think it looks fresh for Summer, and then I have more opportunities to wear pieces that I save for specific events or occasions. I've recently seen a ton of my favorite style bloggers wearing basic t-shirts with beautiful skirts - whether the skirt is pleated like mine, a sophisticated midi length, or just any skirt you may already have in your closet that you neglect because it's considered a dressier piece. Pair it with a soft t-shirt, your favorite sandals or slip on sneakers, and a great bag and you have the perfect Summer outfit that you can wear almost anywhere! I knotted my tee in the back so I didn't have to tuck it in but whatever's comfortable for you is key.

Little Red Ruffle Dress

The thing I love wearing most during the Summer are little lightweight dresses in various colors, silhouettes, and prints. They are just so easy to throw on and go, seemingly appropriate no matter the occasion. They're also just really feminine and pretty.

I ordered this red ruffly number while I was on the road in Utah, and it was waiting on my doorstep upon our return. It's unfortunately already sold out so I can't link it, but I've had some great luck with the boutique I bought it from and you should definitely check them out for similar dresses. The store originates in northern California so a lot of their pieces have that breezy bohemian feel. By the way, I'm not being sponsored by them! I found them on social media and immediately loved their selection of fun clothes, especially with hot Summer nights in mind. I try not to miss an opportunity to dress up a little.

 Considering it's almost August, we are officially in the thick of Summer, although our weather in SoCal sounds downright mild in comparison to what some of you may be experiencing back east! Nate and I leave for Ohio on Saturday, so I'll be joining in on the humid, sticky heat soon. It'll be a quick 5 day visit, but just enough time to enjoy family in another part of the country. Daily Ritual T-Shirt Dress & Nordstrom Sale Buys

I hope everyone enjoyed my little break from style and beauty talk as I shared my road trip experience. I'm still working on a wrap-up post to tie everything together because I still have so many thoughts! But until then, I'm excited to get back to it with this Daily Ritual t-shirt dress I've been wearing on repeat.

Before my road trip, I bought this easy t-shirt dress by the brand Daily Ritual. I originally saw it on my friend and fellow blogger Gina, and it just looked so incredibly comfortable! Perfect for long drives, travel days, running errands, grabbing coffee with a friend, as a swimsuit coverup - so many options!

It's one of those items that you'll constantly reach for. Wear it with some sandals now, pair it with a utility jacket or long cardigan come Fall. The fabric (rayon and spandex) is soft and stretchy, and it hugs curves without feeling constricting. An issue I've had in the past with t-shirt style dresses is that they were either too clingy, or they draped too loosely. This one strikes the ideal balance. I got my normal size medium and the fit is perfect. I rarely say that you guys need something I feature, but in this case, if you're searching for a versatile dress then look no further.


Before I go, I quickly wanted to share what I got from the Nordstrom anniversary sale this year. The clothes and shoes didn't tempt me too much, although I did get a Barefoot Dreams circle cardigan and I love it! It'll be awhile since I can wear it, but I've been curious about these cardigans for a couple years and I totally get the hype now that I have one. I got mine in the pearl shade which is a soft grey. The fit is true to size.

I was most excited about the Charlotte Tilbury products so I got both the Pillow Talk Lip Kit as well as the eyeshadow palette. I'm a huge CT fan but her products are quite expensive. I used all of them yesterday and am really happy with the colors and quality.

I know the sale feels overhyped, but I find it's best to tune out all of the noise and shop it on my own. Did you get anything from the sale? Have a great weekend and I'll see you here on Monday!
